Omišalj
People here have always lived with sun and sea, in a symphony of fragrances and Mediterranean plants, with blue depths and beach pebbles. Njivice, once a small fishing village, today is an attractive holiday resort situated in an environment of coastal vegetation and clean sea. Hotels, the motor camp, bungalows and private apartments are situated in a gentle bay, along pebble beaches and sunbathing areas. Pebble and stone beaches in Njivice or hidden bays in the vicinity for those who prefer peace give everyone the opportunity to choose. Pleasant walks along the coast or dances on a terrace, a break in one of the authentic taverns (konobas) to the sound of local 'klapa' songs, savoring local smoked ham (pršut) are just some of the ways in which you can spend your evenings. If you wish to forget the everyday routine for a while, you have chosen the right destination.
Omišalj is an old Frankopan castle in the northern part of the island, where the island of Krk is closest to the land, and is connected to the rest of the world by a bridge and an airport. The old part of town has developed on a «big rock», a steep, vertically cut rocky hill under which the sea has recessed deeply into the land creating the picturesque Omišalj bay. In the gentle bay hotels and private apartments are situated along the pebble beach and sunbathing areas. Strolling along the many narrow streets you may hear some historic stories dating back to Liburnian and Roman times, or to the time of Krk Frankopan princes. Perhaps visit the parish church from the 13th century ornated with the precious altar piece, with an architecturally prominent rosette on the facade. Once the Roman settlement Fulfinum used to lie in the immediate vicinity of Omišalj and what is left of it today are the remnants of the Early Christian basilica from the 5th century.
