Bakar

Part of the energy and even of the history of the town of Rijeka seems to be reflected somehow in the neighbouring Bakar Bay, today dominated by Bakar, the ancient town with the well preserved 16th century castle and Kraljevica with the Petar Zrinjski Castle from the 17th century. Still today, in the peace of the Bakar Bay there are live memories of the golden sailing days when Bakar used to be an important commercial, port and shipbuilding centre. However, with the introduction of other types of driving energy and machines in maritime transport, Bakar experienced a fate completely different from Rijeka's and, together with the sailboats, passed into history. Today solitary tunere (shore tuna look-outs) - high, inclined ladders from where fish movements in the sea used to be monitored - remain in the Bakar Bay as picturesque monuments of the past.
