Viškovo

The Viškovo Municipality is situated to the north-west of Rijeka. It provides all advantages of living in a small place that possesses, nevertheless, all the required resources, while the vicinity of the town of Rijeka, Opatija and the border with Slovenia are features further adding to its attractiveness.

The Municipality of Viškovo is proud of its traditional heritage – Halubajski zvončari (the famous bell-ringers from Halublje). Halubje fosters its peculiar folk custom - the bell ringers, whose origins date back to prehistoric times. Their original task was to chase away evil winter spirits and to stimulate the new spring cycle. In the Carnival period, irrespective of the weather conditions, they make a tour, in a big group, of the settlements of their native region, following an order established long ago.

Following the tradition, the Halubje Carnival has been organized for already 10years now, gathering an increasing number of participants and visitors each year.

In Viškovo there are also some traditional manifestations worth mentioning, organized by the public institution I.M.Ronjgov – Matetićevi dani (Matetić Days), Mantinjada pul Ronjgi (Mantinjada -specific instrumental performance- in Ronjgi), Večeri pul Matetićevega ognjišća (Evenings at the Matetić's hearth), Proljeće u Ronjgima (Spring in Ronjgi), Kanat pul Ronjgi (Songs in Ronjgi) which further enrich the local cultural programme.

The area of the Memorial Home Ronjgi, long-known as a cultural and gastronomic centre, is also developing in a sports-recreational centre. In 2008 the modernly equipped Sports Park Ronjgi opened its doors to fans of sports and recreation. Located in a beautiful site on 6 thousand square metres it consists of a tennis court, two five-a-side football grounds and a multifunctional playground. Sports and recreation lovers have a wide range of sports and entertainment activities at their disposal.

The Viškovo Municipality is known for the already traditional popular festivity – Matejna, celebrating the patron of both the Parish and the Municipality of Viškovo, St. Matej, and these days are enriched by an exceptional cultural and artistic programme.

There is also the well-known rich and varied gastronomic offer of famous catering facilities in the Viškovo area.
