RUŽICA VINODOLA

The manifestation Ružica Vinodola was created on the basis of a story, preserved and traditionally passed down, about the custom dating back to the centuries when the Croatian noble family Frankopan ruled. The story speaks about the end of grape harvesting in the Vinodol valley, when the most beautiful and most diligent girl harvester was chosen. She was crowned with grape vines and brought to town, at the head of the procession and to the sound of old folk instruments. According to the records, this event took place for the last time in the 19th century, in 1880.
Today «Ružica Vinodola» is a contemporary festivity inspired by the Vinodol past. Inspired by the traditional Ružica election and following ancient forms of entertainment. Games for the Ružica contest are organized and a fair is held of contemporary ecological or hand-made products, all accompanied by music and dance and it lasts for several days.

In 2008 Ružica Vinodola is held in the area of Vinodol and Novi Vinodolski from 8th to 16th August
 

CARNIVALS 

Karnevali imaju vrlo dugu tradiciju. Na Kvarneru se zimi održava jedan od najvećih i najprepoznatljivijih europskih karnevala, međunarodni Riječki karneval, u kojem sudjeluju tisuće maskiranih pojedinaca, družina i alegorijskih kola, te stotinjak tisuća gledatelja. Jedan od najatraktivnijih trenutaka karnevalskog Kvarnera je smotra zvončara u Matuljima, koji nose drevne maske s ovnovskim rogovima. Karnevali se održavaju gotovo u svim mjestima cijelog područja, a urnebesnom zabavom posebno pršte Balinjerada i međunarodni Dječji karneval u Opatiji, maškare u Crikvenici, Ljetni festival u Novom Vinodolskom.

THE TOWN OF RIJEKA

Centre of middle-European culture and tradition, the biggest Croatian port and capital of the region were 51 % of Kvarner inhabitants reside. Recently, increasing care is being devoted to industrial heritage in Rijeka, as a significant tourist potential. It is a town of magnificent architecture (from baroque palaces, monumental buildings dating from times of historicism, secession up to modern, urban architecture), art galleries, museums, theatre, restaurants and cafes, beer halls – fascinating tradition mixed with the flurry and vivacity of the city. Rijeka is also famous for one of the oldest sanctuaries in the world, the famous Franciscan monastery on Trsat, with its precious treasury and arts gallery with the votive chapel. (The Pilgrimage season starts on 10th May, Our Lady of Mercy of the Holy House of Nazareth, and lasts all to the Feast of Christ the King.)
