The Bell Ringers (Zvončari)
The Bell Ringers, or Zvončari, are traditional Carnival performers unique to the Kastav region, particularly the Matulji municipality. With a tradition spanning over 500 years, their purpose is to drive away the evil spirits of winter, herald the arrival of spring, and symbolize fertility.

During the Carnival period, held in January and February, the Zvončari visit villages dressed in distinctive costumes featuring masks, sheepskin, and large bells around their waists. Their striking appearance and the resonating sound of their bells create a captivating spectacle that draws many visitors.

The highlight of this tradition is the Bell Ringers' Parade in Matulji, featuring over 1,500 participants and attracting thousands of spectators. The parade showcases various bell ringer groups, including the Žejanske, Munske, Brežanske, Ćićske, Vlahov Breg – Korensko, Brgujski, Grobnik Dondolaši, Halubajski, Zametski, Kurenti, Frlanski, Buše, and others.
