Lošinj cuisine is typically Mediterranean. One of the most common scenes you will see, and gladly remember long after you leave the archipelago, will be those of fishermen leaving the port in the evening and returning at dawn with their fishing nets filled with fish that is soon transported to the local taverns, restaurants or to the fish market. Therefore fish and seafood, as well as vegetables and fruit picked in the local valleys, are the ace-card of the healthy and very tasty local gastronomic resources. Namely, dishes are often prepared according to traditional recipes and spiced with aromatic herbs from the island and domestic olive oil.
You simply must try the local smoked ham, sheep’s milk cheese, salty anchovies, fish stew, lamb baked in a cast iron pot under hot charcoal and other dishes recommended by your hosts, always delicately seasoned with fresh marjoram, basil, sage, thyme, laurel…
You should also try something from the extensive offer of brandies and liqueurs, rich in local flavours, as well as excellent wine produced from locally-harvested grapes.
