Rab is a typical medieval town enclosed by fortification walls. Once a fortress in the Roman province, in the year 10 BC it was granted town status by Emperor Octavian Augustus. Each building here has a long history and almost every façade is ornamented with a coat of arms. Among the many churches The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church (formerly Cathedral) is a special attraction, as it was consecrated by Pope Alexander III upon his return from Zadar in 1177. Rab is famous for its four Renaissance bell towers, numerous valuable historic documents and its specific “medieval” atmosphere. There are many attractions and interesting places here, such as St. Christopher Square with sculptures commemorating the legend of an unfortunate shepherd named Kalifront and his unhappy love. There are events galore throughout the year when Rab streets are turned into a wonderful stage.
