Bakar
The inhabitants of Bakar Bay have transformed these steep inaccessible rock slopes into fertile vineyards. That is how the famous Bakar terraces (prezidi) came to be and in 1972 they were declared a cultural monument.

The Rijeka Astronomy Center (Astronomski centar Rijeka) is located on the hill of Sveti Križ (Saint Cross), only three kilometers from the center of Rijeka. Many of its characteristics make it unique in this part of Europe. Covering 900 square meters, including both open and closed spaces, the center features a planetarium, a stargazing room, a small and a large hall, a multimedia workshop and a panoramic roof terrace.

The international carnival in Rijeka is organized every year since 1982. The carnival always has a great turnout and it is seen as the fifth season of the year! It is enough to say that Rijeka Carnival is viewed as one of the most famous carnivals in the world, together with the carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and Venice.

Each year at the beginning of October Kastav celebrates Bela nedeja (White Sunday) – a rich four-day event in honor of young Belica, a vine variety native to Kvarner. In order to ensure that everyone has a good time, a rich all-day program is organized. That is not unusual since Bela nedeja is a traditional holiday in Kastav considered by many locals far more important than New Year’s Eve.

In only a couple of years an idea for revitalizing the former paper factory has turned into the most exciting Croatian music festival. To quote one of the visitors: “…a different festival, a festival that has that certain something…” This unique venue, the former industrial complex, makes a grand ambiance for concerts by top stars of urban sound, such as Royksopp, Roisin Murphy, Simian Mobile Disco, Peaches, Turbonegro, and many others.

During the summer months Rijeka offers a diverse cultural program staged through Trsat Castle grounds. The castle was built on the site of the former Roman lookout post to prevent the Turks from advancing during the Turkish invasion of Europe. Interesting performances featuring popular Croatian actors and artists are held within the walls of this lovely historic building.

One morning in 1291 woodcutters from Trsat saw a house in the woods that had not been there before. Frightened and stunned, they notified parish priest Jurjević about the unusual discovery. He calmed them down telling them he already knows about the house. It was Blessed Virgin Mary’s house of Nazareth brought to Trsat by angels fearing the Turkish invaders, where it stood for full three years and seven months.

Kastav is a town of culture and education situated on a small hill above Rijeka. Continuing the tradition, during the summer months Kastav offers a rich cultural program with numerous art shows, concerts and theatrical performances. The diverse program set in the ambiance of a quaint town only contributes to the romantic and charming atmosphere of Kastav’s Cultural Summer (Kastafsko kulturno leto) that appeals to every visitor.

The Halubian Bell Ringers are on the UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Halubajski zvončari from the Kastav area are the famous traditionally masked participants without whom the famous Rijeka Carnival would not be the same. They are traditionally the loudest group in the procession, as the sound of their bells is louder than the noisy merrymaking echoing across Rijeka during the carnival season.

The Vodičajna Equestrian Club with about 20 horses and 40 active club members is located only 15 kilometers from the Rijeka, within the Municipality of Jelenje, close to the local primary school. More than half of the horses are Arabian full-blooded horses, and the club also has warm-blooded, haflinger and half-blooded horses.
