LAKES AND RIVERS
Take a look at Kvarner waters. Everything started from water, our lives depend on it, it makes up the greatest portion of our bodies. Notice their purity, both lake and river waters.
The biggest river in the County, the river Kupa, flows through the mountainous Gorski kotar region. Its source is like a lake, two hundred metres long and thirty metres wide. Other rivers and streams such as Čabranka, Gerovčica, Dobra, Velika and Mala Bjelica, Lokvarka, Ličanka... flow through the woods of Gorki kotar. The main water stream in the Kvarner littoral area is the river Rječina, covering a surface of some two hundred metres. Its water enabled the development of the Town of Rijeka, and the existence of numerous other settlements along its banks, and to its source.
Vransko jezero on the island of Cres is considered a rare natural phenomena. It is a fresh-water lake in the midst of the salty sea and yet outside it. It is 74 m deep, its bottom is more than 61 m below sea level. The lake level is 13 m above the sea level. How come that sea and lake water do not mix, is a geologists’ question to which the answer is deftly hidden far below the island. Vransko jezero is in fact an enormous natural well with exceptionally clean, unpolluted water. Owing to its extraordinary purity it flows merrily into the household taps of two islands: Cres and Lošinj.
