PROTECTED NATURE
On a relatively small area, Kvarner offers 32 protected areas and an even greater number (more than a hundred) of those nominated for various protection categories. Particularly prominent are the National Park Risnjak, the Nature Park Učka, the strict nature reserve Bijele and Samarske cliffs, geomorphologic and ornithological reserves and a whole series of nature monuments, park architecture monuments, significant landscapes and forest-parks.
The Kvarner paths and walk-ways are very diverse: forest, Karst grasslands, subterranean spaces, lungomares permeated with climatic and therapeutic amenities, paths in the habitats of rare and endemic animal and plant life.
Particularly specific is the protected Cres and Lošinj maritime zone with the bottlenose dolphins' natural reserve, and the promenade called «the Path of the Dolphins» surrounding the southern part of the island of Lošinj, from where dolphins can often be observed while walking along the path. The Kvarner promenades' network consists of 1412 km of marked pedestrian and 772 km mountain paths.
