TOURIST TRADITION

More than 160 years in Kvarner

There are two qualities that a tourist destination cannot acquire quickly and efficiently, no matter how original and varied its facilities are. These are natural resources and tradition. Numerous members of the Habsburg dynasty used to spend their winter and summer holidays here, so it is to them that the development of exclusive tourist destinations is linked, for instance in Opatija -  in 1844. received its first summer resort, Villa Angiolina. This was a present that the famous Rijeka patrician, Iginio Scarpa, gave to his wife. The villa is surrounded by a marvellous, carefully cultivated garden with exotic plants that were brought from all over the world by captains, Scarpa’s friends. On 27th March 1884, between Villa Angiolina and St. James’ church the first hotel on the eastern side of the Adriatic was opened - hotel «Kvarner». One year later, in 1885, the first tourist came to visit Mali Lošinj. It was Dr. Conrad Clar, a renowned Austrian physician who brought his sick son there. The child got well soon, and the reputation of Mali Lošinj as a health resort grew rapidly. While king Franz Joseph was fond of Opatija, his brother,  Archduke Joseph, preferred Crikvenica, where the first wooden beach was built in 1888, followed by the Archduchess Clotilda’s hotel.
In the Kvarner Guests Golden Book are also registered the Emperor and king Franz Joseph I, the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, the Belgian princess Stefani, the German emperor William II, the Italian king Vittorio Emanuele III, the ballerina Isadora Duncan, the composer Gustav Mahler, the actress Simone Signoret, the writers Anton Čehov and Henrik Sienkiewicz…
In 1936 the English king Eduard VIII decided to escape from his state obligations and court intrigues and set sail to Rab with his vessel. In the Bay Kandarola, hidden from from curious eyes, he entered the sea completely naked with his companion Wallis. Although the first beach for nudists had been opened in Rab even two years before the king’s arrival, this moment was soon acknowledged as the beginning of naturism in Rab.
