Kvarner is often visited by worshippers. Their most frequent destination is Rijeka, i.e. the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat (Svetište Majke Božje Trsatske), the oldest Croatian sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a place devoting continuous worship to Our Lady since 1291.
Trsat, situated in the eastern part of the city, rests at 135 m asl. It is today an international pilgrimage destination and the venue for holding various religious and other events. In June 2003, on the occasion of the Feast of Pentecost, Trsat was visited by Pope John Paul the Second who enjoyed a private prayer at the altar with a miraculous painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Trsat.
The bronze sculpture The Pilgrim to Trsat (Trsatski hodočasnik), dedicated to the Pope, is a constant reminder of his visit. In addition to the Trsat Sanctuary, Kvarner has many other pilgrimage destinations. In the silence of the churches, in the ambiance created by the sound of prayer and candlelight, worshippers find tranquility, faith and spiritual peace.
