THE TOWN OF RIJEKA

The town has developed on an exceptional geographical, traffic and geo-strategic location, training life with tenacity, experience and emotional perceptions of the numerous, secular historical and political changes. A life permeated with water, originating from the sea, the river, from springs staring at the open sea, but also turned to the significance and the fruits of its hinterland. Created sometime in the prehistoric times as an important spot on the line of the so-called Liburnian limes, Rijeka has matured on the track of rulers and armies, conquerors and destroyers, protected within town walls, through open town gates and along the Rječina banks. Owing to its status of free town, it has developed owing to the courageous and forward-looking architects, innovators, shipbuilders, industrialists, merchants and editors. By road and rail it attracts and brings Central Europe to the sea and absorbs the knowledge of scientists and spiritual leaders. It is grateful to a noblewoman for her self-abnegating gesture, and turns to St. Vid (sv. Vid) and the Holy Virgin from Trsat for spiritual invigoration and protection. It expresses spontaneously its joy of living during the Carnival festivites, and its freshness and youth through the numerous sporting activities.

To walk along Rijeka means first of all to pass by its «Korzo», the town promenade and principal Rijeka street, witnessing hurrying passers-by, easy-going café chatting, music players and sellers, the gathering of young people, trading centres, headquarters of municipal and legal entities.

Korzo mirrors the life of the Town of Rijeka, an atmosphere framed by an enviable architectural scenography opening in some places a view on the port and the sea. The varied historical styles and the mostly excellent architectural solutions only emphasize the numerous Town’s historical structural layers. Korzo is the departure point for all Rijeka tourist and walking destinations.

ASCENT TO TRSAT

To the left of Hotel Continental (1888), on Titov trg (square) is situated the passable chapel Tješiteljice alosnih (Consolatrix of the sad) from which some five hundred steps lead to a plateau in front of the Church Majka Bo ja Trsatska, the famous pilgrimage sanctuary. The Trsat steps («Trsatske stube») are one of the most beautiful monuments of Croatian religiousness. The first 118 steps were built (1513) in honour of our Lady of Trsat, by the Croatian hero Petar Kružić, and were completed in 1726 by the military commander Gabrijel Franjo Aichelberg. It is worthwhile climbing these steps to Trsat, however - due to the relatively steep ascent - they are not recommended to persons with health problems.

WALK AROUND TRSAT

Trsat is a plateau on a hill (139m) overlooking the Rječina canyon and filled with history, tradition and spirituality. Although there is no specially traced route around Trsat, it is a memorable and inspirational walk. The best point of departure is the Frankopan Square, heading to the parish church of St. Juraj (12th century) and the Trsat Castle (an admission fee is charged), a castle erected on the ruins of the Roman observation post. Magnificent views of Rijeka and the Kvarner Gulf are available to visitors. From the central square, access is possible to the area of the oldest Croatian sanctuary and famous pilgrimage destination, the Church of St. Mary of Trsat (Majka Božija Trsatska) and the Franciscan monastery. The Croatian reading room (1887) is situated at the borders of the square, and from there a road and a footboard lead to the Pančić park (the Park of Trsat, 1926 architect Z. Prikril), nominated for the category of monuments of park architecture. It is situated above a rolling hillside (up to 142m) and adequately arranged from the horticultural point of view (J. Kulfanek). There is also a memorial, a memorial ossuary to the Fallen, adjacent to the park. Buxsus sp., laurel(Laurus nobilis), sheepberry (Viburnum tinus), jasmine (Jasminum nudiflorum), holly oak (Quercus ilex) are part of the park’s rich flora. The Trsat Cemetery is also located in the vicinity.

PROMENADE ALONG THE RJEČINA

The Frankopan Castle on Trsat is also the starting point for this promenade. It follows the Rječina flow (18.5 km), and its destination is the Rječina source itself (325m) at the bottom of the Kičelj hill (606m). The path to the source of the Rječina is marked by signposts and panels. Along this path, the Rječina narrates about famous old times, flour milling and handicrafts, offers a view on lush meadows and clear water-flows, on the interesting and extremely rich vegetable and animal life in the straits and canyons, to strength and tameability (accumulation lake Valić, 1968) and looks forwards to the status of significant landscape that has been proposed.

We point out: - the spotted salamanders in the upper stream (Salamandra salamandra) - trouts in the rapids, carps in the Valiæ lake - when the Rječina bed is dry, it is possible to walk along the canyon - in the mill in Martinovo Selo, it is possible to purchase freshly ground flour
