CARNIVAL PARADES
Opatija, Lovran, Viškovo
On
one of the carnival Sundays, the Opatija Riviera traditionally
offers two exceptional events. In the centre of Opatija - a unique “
Balinjerada”, and in Lovran - there is a great Carnival Festival.
There is enough time to participate in both events in order to
experience one after the other.
The latter abounds in close interaction with the audience, masked
groups and individual maskers supported by pop musicians and
cheerful showbiz producers. Lovran carnival has a long deeply rooted
“Tornjera” tradition.
Its
beginning goes back to the early 1920s and is closely related to
Lovran carnival club “Tornjera”. In the hinterland of Rijeka, in
Halubaj, the municipality centre of Viškovo, although with younger
traditions, Halubaj Carnival is renowned for its bursting energy.
Led by the carnival master and carnival queen, thousands of maskers
march in a carnival parade from Marinići to the centre of Viškovo.
The Chimes of Halubaj Bell Ringers follow the procession, and a
masked ball in the Cultural Hall should not be missed for it winds
up this cheerful event.
