Baška on the island of Krk has for a long time been offering much more than sunbathing on the beach Vela plaža. Trekkers, climbers, cyclists, hikers, swimmers and kayakers are increasingly finding their polygons precisely in Baška and in its surrounding areas where the first Baška Outdoor Festival will be held from 16 to 18 October.
With its natural environment, Baška is a true kingdom of outdoor sports. Outdoor activities are increasingly finding their way onto the “to do” lists of foreign and domestic tourists and visitors. Baška has begun with the activities already in the spring (Hiking weekend Baška, Baška Bike Sunday, 4 islands MTB stage race, Krk trekking & trail camp), and will continue with them into the autumn months. The third weekend of October will be marked by an amazing socializing of outdoor athletes and amateurs from all over Croatia and the region. The Female only MTB camp – powered by Perwoll, which provides a memorable women’s weekend for all two-wheel fans, will be open during all three days of the festival. The organizer of the program is Adria bike, and applications are submitted on www.adriabike.hr.
17 October is reserved for the Garmin Krk trekk & trail activity. Organizers, Outdoor.hr and the Trekking League, are offering three categories in order to encompass a greater number of participants: Light (13 km), Ultra (26 km) and Challenger (55 km). On the website of the organizer www.outdoor.hr you can find detailed information about the race routes and the competition. Applications will be accepted until 8 October.
The 38 km long Krk MTB marathon will be held on 18 October, the last day of the festival, and is also organized by Outdoor.hr. The racetrack goes over the Moon, that is, the plateau of the Moon above Baška from where you can enjoy a spectacular view of the Velebit Mountain, the sea and the nearby islands. Prepare your mountain bikes and sign up at www.outdoor.hr no later than 8 October. With the payment of a single entry fee, you acquire the right to participate in both races (trekk & MTB).
The last day of the festival will offer activities for hikers. On 18 October, a hiking trip from Baška to the harbours Vela and Mala luka is organized in cooperation with the Mountaineering Club “Obzova”. The road length is 15 kilometres, or five to six hours on foot. A part of the trail requires the use of hands while climbing, which makes this trail strenuous. On the same day, in addition to hiking, MC “Obzova” organizes a climbing activity on the climbing spot Portafortuna, which starts at 10:30 a.m. Applications can be made at the Municipality of Baška Tourist Board (00385/51-856-817) or at MC “Obzova” by calling 00385/91-75490-28 (Leo Pavičić), as well as by sending an e-mail to pdobzova@gmail.com. Sun, sea and beautiful beaches are only the basis for a sustainable resort and beach tourism, while a rich cultural and historical heritage, a wide range of sports and recreational facilities, the gastronomic offer and cultural and entertainment events are what make a destination stand out as a top tourist destination - a place which in addition to a classic summer holiday offers interesting content to its tourists even off-season.
Outdoor maps
One successful example of such an additional supply is the recently completed project of two local Krk governments, the municipality of Punat and the Municipality of Baška, titled “Outdoor maps”. These multilingual maps are intended for all lovers of an active vacation and excursions to the nature: walkers, hikers, bikers, climbers, and serve as a guide through nature with marked hiking and biking trails. The use outdoor maps makes the stay and movement through the area more interesting, more meaningful, but also safer. They include trails suitable for mountain biking, hiking paths, but also climbing areas which fans of climbing activities are especially interested in. Walking paths and trails which every summer attract an increasing number of visitors, who prefer active holidays, especially at low seasons, are mapped out in a very appealing, high quality and informative way.
