In the local area, the carnival period is also known as the fifth season. It lasts from the feast day of st. Anthony (17 january) to Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday, which marks the beginning of Lent. At this time of the year, the Halubajski zvončari start their traditional annual pageant. Over three days, on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday before Lent, the zvončari visit many villages and hamlets in the Kastav area, which includes the present Municipality of Viškovo, the Town of Kastav, and the City of Rijeka. On all three days, they start their pageant, which lasts from the early morning until the evening, in a house called kod Bačurkinih in the village of Marčelji. The zvončari visit approximately twenty villages a day, stopping in each one for refreshments and to get together with their hosts, which contributes to the sense of community and keeping this tradition alive.
