The Rijeka Carnival, which has been renovated in the city of Rijeka since 1982 – has a starting point in distant history. The first written clue is a document from 1449 that prohibited covering the face with a mask to prevent criticism of the authorities and to maintain peace and order.

The Carnival of Rijeka, according to the Sunday Times, is listed at the very top of the world's most attractive events. Rijeka at that time, called the fifth season, became the carnival center of this part of the world. Lavish parades and allegorical wagons are perhaps the most serious, and certainly the most honest, critique of social reality.
