Once again this year, the Municipality of Matulji proudly affirms its strong identity and deep-rooted connection to carnival traditions by entering its very own season – Pust. The carnival period begins on the night of 5 to 6 January, when the Žejane Bell Ringers traditionally announce the start of the festivities with their first procession. The following night, the Munj Bell Ringers will raise the pust – a symbolic figure blamed for all misfortune of the past year.
The official opening of the carnival season across the municipality will take place on 17 January, on Antonja, when the pust will be raised in the centre of Matulji and surrounding villages, marking the start of the masquerade period that lasts until 18 February – Ash Wednesday, when the pust is symbolically judged and burned.
Throughout the entire carnival period, the Municipality of Matulji will be filled with the sound of bells as bell ringer groups from the area take part in traditional processions: Brežani, Brgujci, Mučići, Munj, Rukavac, Zvoneća, Žejane, Frlanija and Korensko – Vlahov Breg. Their visits bring the distinctive ringing of bells, carnival customs and joyful atmosphere for which this region is widely known and which are recognised as part of UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.
This year’s programme is rich and diverse, with the central event taking place on Carnival Saturday, 14 February, when the 29th Bell Ringers’ Gathering of the Municipality of Matulji will be held.
