With its favorable climate, sub-Mediterranean vegetation protected from strong winds, salty sea air, lovely pebble and sand beaches and a great number of sunny hours per year Crikvenica, popular as a health retreat for the treatment of respiratory diseases since the late 19th century, has gradually developed into a modern climate and health resort.

In 1910 the Czech Marija Steyskalova established the children's recovery centre in the hired villa „Zeleni gaj“ (Green grove) between Crikvenica and Dramalj.

All this has been the historic base of Crikvenica’s health reputation and the development of a health resort, now operating for more than 60 years. Since 1995 it bears the name Special Rehabilitation Hospital Thalassotherapy, in the framework of which now operates the new Polyclinic for hyperbaric medicine. In addition to its many medical indications as well as face and body beauty treatments, the hyperbaric chamber also provides greater security to divers.
