ASSUMPTION DAY PILGRIMAGE

Rijeka

One morning in 1291 woodcutters from Trsat saw a house in the woods that had not been there before. Frightened and stunned, they notified parish priest Jurjević about the unusual discovery. He calmed them down telling them he already knows about the house. It was Blessed Virgin Mary’s house of Nazareth brought to Trsat by angels fearing the Turkish invaders, where it stood for full three years and seven months. Afterwards, it was time for the house to continue its journey to Loreto, where it should have been transferred in the first place. To comfort the people of Trsat, Prince Martin Frankopan built a Franciscan Monastery at the site where the house stood. Today, Trsat is home to a Sanctuary of Our Lady known for many answered prayers and pilgrimages of numerous worshippers, especially on the Assumption Day.
