As much as the diversity of the Kvarner regions can surprise you, so wide is the range of the gastronomic quantity here. And actually, Gorski kotar is a real gastronomic surprise!
The supply is dictated by the climatic features and consists of a combination of its rich gifts, tradition and modern nutrition trends. Venison meat lovers will certainly come into their own here since the local menu includes venison smoked ham, venison or deer stew with home-made «gnocchi» or bread dumplings. Likewise many mushroom, frog legs, trout dishes etc. are on the menu. Famous and highly appreciated are dishes based on pickled cabbage for which this region has been famous since ancient times. It is also good to know this: the pickled cabbage liquid (pickle) is an excellent cure for hangovers!
Forest fruits are an excellent motive for spending your day picking – organized by your hosts as an interesting tourist programme – to end the day tasting traditional dishes and sweets made of strawberries, juniper berries, apples, elder or different types of mushrooms, potatoes etc.
The Forest Fruits Days, organized in several localities such as Begovo Razdolje, Mrkopalj, Skrad and Ravna Gora, are combined with walks, rides by bike, gastronomic workshops etc – so they no doubt make an ideal combination of pleasing, useful and, of course, tasteful experiences….
Konoba Volta Fužine
Tavern 'Volta' is located in the center of the most developed tourist town of Gorski Kotar, a few minutes from the lake 'Bajer'. In its gastronomic offer are offered a variety of meat dishes, mostly of the ingredients characteristic of the mountainous region.
Eva Lokve
Restaurant Eva is located in the middle of a dense forest on the slope above Lokvarsko Lake, in the part of lokve municipality. the restaurant is a favorite among families, and on the menu are traditional dishes characteristic of this region: mushroom soups, deer stews or boar served with gnocchi, breaded frog legs and a few pastas and risottos.
